Da Nang City had 4 severe droughts in 1988, 1990, 1998 and 2002 that caused 700,000 local residents lack of domestic water, stagnation of service and production activities.
2002 was the longest drought from May to August, considered to be the worst drought in nearly 20 years causing prolonged saltwater intrusion in the rivers of Cau Do, Cam Le, VinhDien and Cu De. Two reservoirs HoaTrung, Dong Nghe and 21 small reservoirs were totally dry. In Viet Nam, day or month having temperature over 35 Celsius degree is regarded as the day or month having heatwave.
